The Latest from Church Lane

Linby CW FC 2 Radford 0

D. Barrie, J. Start

Linby welcomed EMCL outfit Radford down to Church Lane for their second pre-season fixture. The game saw a return to action for much missed forward Martyn Gould after he suffered ACL damage back in October 2007.

Several changes to the starting eleven from the previous week with many people having to get used to playing with new people. As a result, it took 15-20 minutes for the team to settle, with Radford managing to get behind the back line on a couple of occassions and force Craig Lear into a couple of close range saves. Once settled, the game became a stale mate in the heat with very few chances of note from either side. The sides went in at half time at 0-0.

Several changes were made at half time and these fresh legs nearly paid dividends with two guilt edged chances going begging inside the first 5 minutes. The deadlock was soon broken when Dave Barrie shrugged off the attentions of a Radford defender to bare down on the keeper and poke the ball past him as he advanced. The game then began to become stretched as the heat started to take effect. The game was over as a contest with around 10 minutes remaining as Kyle McDermott's cross/shot was tamely palmed into the path of Jamie Start who duly slotted home from close range.

Another good work-out for the squad who next face Selston at Church Lane on Saturday 1st August.

Linby CW FC 4 Arnold Town XI 1

C. Dancer, K. McDermott, T. Campbell, O.G.

A youthful Arnold side turned up for today's game and looked to upset the apple cart with an early goal scored from a sloppy corner. Linby quickly hit back though, with Clint Dancer calmly following up his powerful header that thundered off the bar from a Tom Campbell freekick. Dave Barrie then set Kyle McDermott free and he slotted home despite the keeper's best efforts. Tom Campbell rounded off the first half goals with a pin point finish from 20 yards following a neat pass from Jamie Start. First half score 3-1.

Wholesale changes at half time. Despite going close on several occasions and rarely being troubled at the other end, it was just a solitary goal this half for Linby, with an unfortunate looping headed own goal from a Simon Martin free kick. Full time 4-1.

Club History

A team known as Linby Church Institute plied their trade in the Notts Alliance as early as 1903 , reaching the semi finals of the Notts Senior Cup in 1905, losing to Nottm Forest Reserves, who went on to win the cup.

They disbanded in the early 1930s.

Re-formed in 1946, under the shrewd guidance of ex Arsenal player Ernest “Tim”Coleman, Linby became the biggest non-league club in Notts in the space of ten heady years.

Honours included Notts Alliance championships ,Central Alliance title and three Notts Senior Cup wins, and three Senior Cup Runners up. The Senior Cup wins came in 1950, 1952 and 1954.

November 1950 saw Linby entertain Gillingham in the FA Cup 1st round (proper) in front of a record crowd of 6,850 at the Old Gatehouse ground.

When Coleman was tempted away to save Notts County from Re-election in 1956, Linbys fortunes dipped.

The Club adopted an unfamiliar all green kit in the mid 1960s, much to the dismay of their legion of supporters. With the green kit came relegation from the Central Alliance Div1, and Linby for the first time since 1946 were no longer the top Hucknall and district team.

In the 1970s Rick Bentley and Phil Cresswell managed Linby in the old Central Alliance and the East Midland league, with players the calibre of Rick's son Steve and Ray Sears (a 4 time Notts Senior Cup winner with Sutton Town) playing for us. Unfortunatley the standard prompted a move from the now decaying Gatehouse, Linby went to play at Annesley Welfare.

Sadly the old ground has now gone, Linby moved to their present ground in 1985 and under the guidance of Dave Ingram began to edge their way back to former glories.

Notts FA intermediate cup winners in 1995, they won promotion to the Notts Alliance Senior division in 1997.

In 2005 the club achieved FA Charter standard status, and under former player and reserve team manager Dave Bradshaw they came runners up in the NSL senior division.

2007 saw the appointment of Kev Corbett as manager where he led them to the NSL Senior Cup Final, where they were defeated by Carribean Cavaliers.

In December 2008, Kev Corbett resigned due to family and work commitments. Assistant Manager Kez Dean took the helm along with Matt Keetley. In just a few months in charge they led the side to the Notts FA Intermediate Cup Final where they were beaten by Carlton Town Reserves. Finishing 8th in the league should bring with it a Notts FA Senior Cup spot for 2009.
After finishing bottom of the Senior Division in 2010/11 Linby looked to Dave Bradshaw and Dave Marlow to change their fortunes.
The duo made an immeadiate impact , instantly turning the Club back into Title Challenges.
The Club then made the decision to apply for the Central Midlands League for 2012/13 season.
We now await a new "era" in the Linby Colliery story.
