Following the resignation of the management team, a virtual reserve team plus Craig Lear, Darren Dickens, Dave Elson and Ross Cheeseman took on last years Champions.They produced a brave battling performance, which didn’t reflect in the scoreline. In fact Linby should have gone ahead in the 22nd minute as good battling by Jonny Scott created a chance for young full back Richard Peel, but he put his shot into the side netting. As always Linby were punished a minute later, as Danny Blanchard scored 0-1.

Good saves from Lear and a goalline clearance from the impressive Tee Ebanks stemmed the ever growing tide, as Linby were pressed onto the back foot. On 63 minutes it was 2-0, as Ian Foss hit a screamer in off the post. Linby were then unlucky with 2 late goals which both looked offside. Danny Chaplin and Tony Boulton scoring.

Another depleted team, made worse by injuries in the first half to both Mark Robinson and Captain Pete Campbell. Craig Lear saved a Jake Fisher penalty on 15 minutes, but Kimberley opened scoring the on 22mins, through Gary Fleming. Linby then had good chances to equalise as a Pete Campbell volley was well saved on 27 minutes and Kyle Mcdermott shot wide on 32 minutes. As normal Linby were punished to the full, as Kimberley went 2-0 up on 40 minutes.

On 50 minutes it was 3-0, good move and finish from Reece Bertram. Tom Campbell then had a good chance saved. On the 90 minutes a smart turn and finish from Walters made it 4-0.

Another availability crisis with 5 changes from the previous week. Linby started the brightest and were the better team first half , taking the lead on 20 minutes. Spencer Goff crossed from the left where Tom Campbell had his near post effort parried out, but only to Darren Dickens who swept the ball home.

Linby went on to create further chances with Tom Campbell twice going close to adding to their lead .

Out of nowhere Gedling equalised on the stroke of half time as Danny Walker mins hit a 25 yard screamer into the top corner, 1-1.

Linby never came out second half and on 65 minutes, GSB made it 2-1 through Ryan Johnson. Danny Gee soon made it 3 with a precision strike from 25 yards over 'keeper Craig Lear.

Gedling added a fourth through Luke Attenborough, but good work from Dickens allowed Spencer Goff to pull a goal back on 80 minutes, with a well taken stike.

Left back Jack Caulton rounded off a miserable afternoon for Linby making it 5-2 in the last minute.

Linby Reserves ended their season with a draw against bottom of the table side Sandhurst Reserves . Despite missing a raft of chances for 80 minutes, they were unable to make the breakthrough. On 80 minutes, disaster struck when Sandhurst took the lead through Phil Oates.

Aaron Ingram popped up with an equaliser in the 87th minute and could have won it in the dying minutes.

A third win on trot in this “six Pointer” virtually assures Linby Senior Division football next season. Due mainly to injuries, Linby were forced to make 5 changes from the team that thrashed Notts Police on Tuesday.

On 8 minutes, Linby fashioned their first chance, with the returning Nick Davies' free kick being met by the head of Pete Campbell, but producing a good save from Danny Burke in the 'Dala goal.

After Kyle Mcdermott had seen a 20 yard free kick blocked on 25 minutes, Craig Lear made a fine save to deny a Rich Whyman 22 yard shot.

On 34 minutes, good work by McDermott, saw Pete Campbell turn and shoot inches wide of the mark.

Early second half 'Dala had their best spell of the game, spurning 2 presentable chances through Mark Curry and Rich Whyman.

On 65 minutes, a searching Dickens through ball found the influential Pete Campbell who's shot was well saved by the legs of Burke.

Linby sensed an opening as on 69 minutes, McDermott also saw a shot from 20 yards saved. The goal duly came on 73 minutes. A searching ball from Davies down the left found the run of Cheeseman. He delivered a good cross to the far post where Mcdermott's powerful header came down off the bar and bounced on the line. Pete Campbell was on hand to sweep the loose ball home from close range, 1-0.

They got a second goal and breathing space on 80 minutes, Davies found McDermott who's shot was only parried and following up Campbell nudged the ball over the line for 2-0.

Magala were awarded a penalty on 89 minutes, very harshly given against Lear, as he came out to close a 1 on 1 down. Curry shot wide, but the Referee deemed Lear had fouled him, although there was no were the 'keeper could have gone. Whyman scored from the spot, 2-1.

Man of the Match was close, as 'Dala gave it to Jake Keetley for a typical all action performance. Pete Campbell was certainly close with 2 good finishes and driving the team forward. Everybody had decent games, McDermott always a threat along with Davies and Cheeseman and at the back Jonny Scott was good and young Richard Peel excellent at right back.

A quick fire double over the Police.The writing was on the wall after 14 minutes when Spencer Goff had a goal disallowed for a dubious offside decision. On 17 minutes a Cheeseman lob produced a great save from Joe Parlatt.

On 19 minutes Goff shot from 20 yards into bottom corner. Just 5 minutes later and from a Goff cross, Parlatt parried into the path of Jake Keetley 10 yards out for 2-0. Before the half hour it was 3 as from a Goff free kick, Nathan George produced a towering header. It was 4 before the break as on 34 minutes another great break from Linby saw Goff cross to the back post for Dickens to plant his header into the net.

On 55 minutes Police reduced the arrears through Nathan Scott. 10 minutes later and there was a goal of the season candidate from Spencer Goff. Fully 35 yards out he sees Parlatt off his line and produced a 1st time volley into the top corner. On 85 minutes Goff completes his hattrick from a flick on by Jamie Start. Ther must have been 10 minutes of stoppage time from which Police got a consolation through Wayne Bennett 6-2.

After a wait of 20 weeks, Linby win a match.They made it hard for themselves, after coasting into a three nil lead in the opening half an hour and also missing a second half penalty.

Linby started well and after 8 minutes, Ross Cheeseman's 18 yard shot was inches over the bar. Linby took the lead on 14 minutes, Jake Keetley's through ball allowed Kyle McDermott To beat the offside trap and he squared the ball for Pete Campbell to finish neatly in to the bottom corner from 15 yards out,1-0.

It was 2-0 on 28 minutes, again McDermott's pace was too much for the Police defence. This time he cut the ball back to Cheeseman, who found the top corner of the net from the edge of the area. Linby were in dreamland 2 minutes later. A fine move between Mark Robinson and Campbell found Darren Dickens wide on the right, he beat the full back and fired a low cross across the face of goal, where Cheeseman was on hand at the far post to make it 3-0.

On 39 minutes, Police pulled a goal back. Gary Mercer's deep free kick saw Wayne Bennett head home at the far post, 3-1.

On 52 minutes, good work from Dickens set up Campbell, who saw his effort well saved. Then on 58 minutes, McDermott was pushed over in the box and Linby were awarded a penalty. Nick Davies took the spot kick, but Police Keeper Scott Burton made a good save, parrying the ball onto the post and out.

Linby were never 'hanging on', and as the game was in its dying moments of injury time Police scored a fortunate second. A long ball down the middle was attacked by centre back Ross Horton (who had enjoyed a good game along with Nathan George at the heart of the Linby defence) but Police striker Lee Collopy clearly pushed him, causing the ball to flick off his head and loop over Craig Lear for what can only be described as a 'freak Goal', 3-2. Luckily it didn’t have any effect on the final score, as the referee blew for full time as soon as Linby re-started.

The win takes Linby out of the bottom two, but with their next 3 games, ( Police away Tuesday 20th April, Magdala Satuday 24th April, Gedling Southbank Saturday 1st May) all 'six pointers' against teams in the bottom 5, things could change dramatically.

1-0 down in first minute with a harsh penalty against James Logan, Linby equalised on 10 minutes through good work from Jonny Scott as he set up Liam Atter to score from 12 yards out. On 16 minutes, Linby were in front. Scott headed home at the far post to make it 2-1. Newark were then awarded a second penalty for handball against Gaz Towle, but Stuart York pulled off a good save to keep them in the lead.

On 45 minutes, Newark equalised through Ollie Gee's 25 yard shot. The home side scored the vital 3^rd goal on 75 minutes and Linby had no option but to send men forward chasing the game. That’s when the youthful Flowserve team picked them off on the break with 2 further late goals .

The season plumbed new depths of despair, with Linby's worst defeat since the infamous 9-2 at Kimberley on 14th April 2007. Missing the influential pair of Spencer Goff and Kyle McDermott, they welcomed back Club Captain Pete Campbell.

Linby had the first chance of the game, when Jonny Scott hit the side netting on 18 minutes. Just 4 minutes later and Linby find themselves 1-0 down, as Jake Keetley is adjudged very harshly to have handled the ball while he made a sliding block. Despite Micheal Evan being asked to leave the field due to a lack of shin pads he takes Heath's shin pads and takes the penalty. Craig Lear saves the kick, but Evans is first to the loose ball and scores at the second attempt. Following the goal, referee Simon Hare books Jake Keetley for vociferously telling one of his teammates to 'shut up'.

Clifton make it 2-0 on 48 minutes as Danny Johnson turns and fires a rocket low into Lear's left hand post. Referee Hare then gives Keetley a second caution on 50 minutes for a late challenge, leaving Linby with 10 men. These yellow cards being the only two of the match.

Linby held out at 2-0 until the 82nd minute, when Clifton clinically put them to the sword, scoring 5 goals as Evans completed his hattrick and Stuart Robinson, Ashley Way and Pat Sneath netted for the home side.

Linby have 6 games left in which to stay out of the bottom two and possible relegation.

The winless run goes on. Linby looked superb going forward, dangerous every time they attacked, but equally looked dreadful in defence. As a spectacle for the neutral, the game had everything, but for Linby to get nothing from it, was somewhat an injustice .

Basford prompted by ex Town man Richard Liburd, were on top early. However, Linby scored first against the run of play in the 5th minute. A long ball from Nick Davies found Spencer Goff, who lobbed the Basford Keeper Curtis Mcdonald, to make it 1-0.

After Craig Lear had pulled off a great save to deny Kevin Walker, Linby made it 2-0 on 13 minutes. Again a searching ball from the impressive Davies found Goff, who still had a lot to do, but finished superbly into the bottom corner.

Kevin Walker then had 2 excellent chances in the space of 2 minutes. First he hit an upright and then he dallied on the ball to allow Craig Lear to save.

On 37 minutes, Goff spurned an opportunity for his hat trick, after good work from Kyle McDermott. Then came a crazy 5 minutes up to the half time break, in which 3 goals were scored. Firstly Walker shot through a sea of bodies into the corner, 2-1. Just 3 minutes late it was all level as from a Basford corner, Liburd headed into the bottom corner, 2-2. Then on 45 minutes, Goff wriggled free and crossed for Darren Dickens who looks certain to score at the far post, only to be fouled from behind. Chris Stevens, the referee gives the penalty, but only books the Basford defender . Goff steps up to score the penalty for his hattrick, 3-2.

The second half by comparison is a weaker affair with less chances for both teams. Basford find another equaliser on 65 minutes as poor defending from Linby allowed Damien Robinson to score, 3-3. If anything Linby looked the more likely to steal an unlikely win late on. On 80 minutes, McDermott has a near post volley saved, from a Davies corner and on 88 minutes, came their best chance. Goff's shot was only parried by McDonald to Dickens, who with the goal at his mercy puts his shot over an open goal.

As is Linbys total lack of luck, Basford steal a winner in injury time. Walker looked to have fouled Bobby Harrison, but went on to produce a superb finish to make it 3-4.

A measure of Linby's current form as they lose to a team they beat 6-1 at home early in the season. After Stuart York had made good early saves, Cavaliers hit the post on 23 minutes.

Cavaliers took the lead on 32 minutes, but it was all square 8 minutes later as Jonny Scott powered home a header from Liam Atter's corner.

Cavs got the winner on 66 minutes as they punished some bad defending from a corner.

Travelling to Cavaliers without 3 goalkeepers (Craig Lear unavailable, Glenn Guyatt and Stuart York both injured), this was always going to be a tough ask. Linby gambled on playing Reserve centre half James “fingers” Logan in goal. Logan, a former Nottingham City Boys goalkeeper, didn’t let them down with a faultless display between the “sticks”.

Cavaliers fielding their strongest line up are always a big threat and having recovered from the unrest caused by the exodus of former manager Barry Campbell and several high profile players, they have now strung 5 wins together on the trot.

Linby got off to the perfect start. On 7 mins, Kyle McDermott's free kick found the head of Darren Dickens, whose flick on put in the speedy Spencer Goff to slide home from 12 yards, 1-0.

On 10 minutes, a good Linby move involving McDermott and Goff ended with Nick Davies firing a 20 yard shot inches over the bar. Cavaliers first chance fell to centre forward Micky Grinnion, who saw his 1 on 1 well saved by Logan.

On 18 minutes, a well worked move saw Goff put Davies in 1 on 1, but the Linby man's shot was saved by Mick Samuels. On 23 minutes, Cavaliers found an equaliser. The dangerous Chris Joseph dropped deep to pick up a ball from Winnie Brown and Logan could nothing with his 25 yard rocket that flew into the bottom corner,1-1.

Linby still looked a threat, with McDermott and Goff at the heart of everything good they did. Goff saw a 20 yard shot saved and then whistled a 25 yard free kick inches over the bar.

Then came the killer blow for the locals. Right on the stroke of half time they were caught napping. From a quickly taken throw in, Gavin Lewis got in behind them. Despite looking at least 5 yards offside, he got to the byeline and crossed for Grinnion to power home from close range,1-2. Linby looked in vain for an Offside flag that never came. Just how Linby's luck has been going all season, but they say you make your own luck in football.

Linby battled on in the awful muddy conditions and carved out enough chances again to have got something from the game. On 60 minutes good work from the busy McDermott set up Davies for a shot that flew just over the bar. Then on 69 minutes, a jinking Davies run set up McDermott, who put his shot over the bar.

On the counterattack Cavaliers always posed a threat especially as Linby went 3 at the back, throwing centre half Dickens forward. On 78 minutes, Dan Smith's shot was well saved by Logan. Cavaliers added a third goal on 88 minutes when Wes Burke expertly turned Dave Elson and hit a pile driver into the roof of the net, giving Logan no chance,1-3.

Reflecting on the match Linby felt if they had produced this kind of performance last week at Ruddington they would have won that and many more games this season, but league tables don’t lie and Linby are in with one hell of a fight to preserve their Senior division status . Lets hope for more performances like this, but with better results.

The bad run continues, losing at bottom of the league Ruddington due to last minute goal.

There was a big shake up in team selection with Nathan George starting up front with Spencer Goff. However, Linby went behind on 25 minutes as Miles Snape scored for the home side. Nathan George had a good chance to level 5 minutes later but the keeper saved well. On 33 minutes Linby should have had a penalty as Goff is brought down, but it's not given. Just 6 minutes later Goff is brought down again in the area. This time the referee awards a penalty and Goff fires home, 1-1.

Linby fall behind again on 65 minutes, Andy Davies scoring, 1-2. Linby find second equaliser on 81 minutes, when after an almighty scramble, centre half Ross Horton scores from close range, 2-2.

Linby thought they'd got a point, but in stoppage time a Ruddington free kick was glanced home by substitute John Douglas-Green, 2-3. The loss puts Linby into the bottom four.

Linby Reserves must have gifted Ruddington 6 of their 7 goals through comical defending and goal keeping. After having most of the play in the first half they found themselves 4-2, down at half time. Linby's goals both scored by Darren Dickens.

The second half was a shambles as Linby shipped another 3 goals to continue their run of poor form.

Worrying winless run goes on, despite yet another decent performance. By all accounts Linby were the better side in the first half, creating two one on ones for Ross Cheeseman and Kyle McDermott, both chances not taken.

Waters made a good save to deny McDermott's free kick on 40 minutes but a mad 10 minutes early on in the second half condemned Linby to defeat, conceding 3 goals. That's probably the difference between a team that’s got used to winning and a team running low on luck and confidence.

Missing several key players in Dickens, Howell and Scott and several first team call ups, Linby reserves aquitted themselves well against an experienced Underwood Villa team.

Villa were on top in the first half, with Glenn Guyatt pulling off 2 good saves to deny veteran striker Steve Froggat.

On 54 minutes, Liam Mcaleese went close when his 18 yard shot was well saved by the keeper., but the only goal of the game came on 55 minutes when Guyatt saved an initial shot from Froggatt only for Eddie Morrell to follow up and score from an acute angle.

On 75 minutess, following Aaron Ingrams free kick, left back Phil Riley's shot was deflected just wide.

News from the Lane

As you know we have set a provisional start date for the new dressing rooms complex at Church Lane for May 2012 .

Ricky Stevenson (Notts FA development officer) has said a new funding window will probably open in 18 months and at the moment is doing a grant search of the area for us.

Cllr Mick Murphy is looking into a funding pledge made by his predecessor at County Hall .

We are re-starting development activities this year.

Linby Reserves had beaten Awsworth Reserves on the same ground 3-0 only 4 weeks ago in the League Cup, so this result was somewhat of a shock. Did Linby think all they had to do was to put the kit on and they would win?

Although stuttering in the last 2 weeks, with a 0-0 and a 2-3 loss at home, this result will come as a big “kick up the backside” to the players and management of Linby Reserves.

It all started going wrong in the 20th minute, when Glenn Guyatt's clearance hit Phil Shaw's backside and freakily flew into the net. Nothing could be said of the rest of the visitor's goals as they took apart the Woeful home side . Doubles for Adam Murphy, Phil Shaw and substitute Liam Bradley gave Awsworth their biggest ever win at Church Lane.

Managers Matt Keetley and Kez Dean rang the changes in an effort to break The winless run. Back in came Kyle McDermott, Tom Campbell, Luke Parkin and new signing Sean Middleton.

Against an in form Cotgrave team on their home ground, it was always going to be a tough ask. Linby again performed well for a good 70 minutes but were undone as the legs tired.

The deadlock was broken in the 76th minute, when 1st half substitute Dominic Lynas pounced onto a half clearance to plant his 16 yard shot into the bottom corner. The home team added a second with only 2 minutes left on the clock, through top scorer Lee Penley.

An awful first half performance from Linby Reserves, a poor penalty decision against James Logan and static defending allowed the bright Carton Colts to make it three nil by the 30 minute mark.

Keeper Glen Guyatt doing his best to keep the score down, with a 1 on 1 save, but then came a big turning point on 40 minutes as Jonny Scott in 1 on 1 is brought down by Carlton's 'keeper Hadlee Dunn just outside the area. A free kick and surely a sending off, but to everybody's surprise, the 'keeper doesn’t even get a yellow card.

Incensed Linby come out in the second half and pulled back 2 early carbon copy goals as Darren Dickens turned his man and shot into the bottom corner. Linby laid siege on the Carlton goal, forcing 6 second half corners all to no avail. On 84 mins, as Linby push more men forward, Logan breaks into the area only to be brought down by the last defender for a nailed on penalty, but again the referee makes a poor decision and gives nothing.

Finalists 2 years ago, Linby bowed out of the League Cup in the first round for the secong year running. Linby produced a timid performance and were soundly beaten with 2 first half goals for Kevin Walker and a second half strike from Tobias Richardson.

In reply Linby did create a few decent chances, which they failed to convert. On the other hand Craig Lear was the busier of the keepers, making several good saves to keep the score down.

This was not a good game to watch, with only a handful of chances in the entire 90 minutes.

Veteran 'keeper Stuart York, in for the holidaying Glen Guyatt, made a good save on 33 minutes.

Newark 'keeper Elliot Walters made a good save to deny Tom Endy on 65 minutes.

Newark's Rob Horseman put a free header wide late on, but Ash Ward was happy with a new look back four, in which James 'Fingers' Logan and Tee Ebanks were outstanding . Phil Riley and Connor Hamilton, the full backs also played well and the clean sheet was deserved.

Linby, still without influential skipper Pete Campbell (family comitments) and possibly their most dangerous striker Kyle McDermott (work), also lost 'veteran defensive lynchpin' Dave Elson with a bout of Flu. Along with a raft of other 'unavailables', they put in another battling performance at Wollaton and only lost the game in the last 10 minutes to a 'freak' goal and a 'wonder' goal.

Wollaton started the better team and duly took the lead on 10 minutes through midfielder Chris Page. Linby then went on to dictate the next hour of the game, with Nick Davies prominent in most good things Linby created. Davies wwas heavily involved in Linby's equaliser when his cross was flicked into his own net by defender Tom Lambert.

Linby went on to create numerous chances, notably two one on ones for Ross Cheeseman. Although not clear cut, with both chances being wide and on the angle, both were saved by Wollaton's excellent 'keeper Jamie Flinders. Davies himself had a similar chance which he shot just too high on 66 minutes.

As Linby's legs began to fade, Wollaton regained the lead on 81 minutes with what can only be described as a freak goal. Full back Jake Samuels swung in a deep cross from the left and it floated over everybody in to the far corner of the net.

If that was a freak, Wollaton's third was top drawer. In the 90th minute, a 30 yard excocet from substitute Ben Cheetham flew into the top corner. FT 3-1

Linby 'mugged' Magdala Reserves with 2 goals in the last 5 minutes to win this game and extend their winning run to four games.

Magdala were the better side for most of the match, taking the lead on 10 minutes through Craig Pearson.

Linby did create chances of their own and on 28 minutes equalised with a peach of a free kick from Aaron Ingram, after Darren Dickens had been brought down on the edge of the box, 1-1.

On 34 minutes, Luke Parkin, back at the club, and playing in the reserves for fitness, cleared off the line, to keep the scores level come half time.

Magdala regained the lead on 65 minutes, when Pearson scored his second of the match and it looked like they would take all 3 points.

The introduction of substitutes Mitch Duffin and Paul Randle gave Linby new life as they relentlessly pressed, forcing 7 late corners. The pressure eventual told, when an Ingram corner on 85 minutes was headed home by top scorer Jonny Scott, 2-2.

Linby snatched the points from another Ingram corner in the 89th Minute, when Tom Endy pounced on a loose ball to fire home from 16 yards out. FT 3-2

Linby's third big local derby of the season and still unbeaten with 1 win and 2 draws.

Linby, although the home team will take more from this game than Bulwell. Their alarming player unavailability crisis hit a new high on Saturday, with 7 regular first team players out . Four reserves had to be drafted in and all of them played their part in a gutsy battling performance against a more than useful Bulwell team. It didn’t lead to a classic game at all. The first half Linby slightly shaded, with a one on one for striker Ross Cheeseman being saved well by Matt Singleton on 26 minutes. On 35 minutes, left back Dave Elson saw his shot blocked following a long throw from Ross Horton. Nick Davies was prominent, constantly prompting Linby attacks.

The second half was a totally different story, as Bulwell dominated play throughout. On 70 minutes, Linby substitute Tom Walters cleared off the line from the dangerous Dwayne Haywood, from Bulwells fifth corner of the second 45 minutes. Linby's only half chance of the second period came on 76 monutes as hard working striker Cheeseman's lob from outside the area drifted a yard wide..

Bulwell threw on 3 attacking subs for the last 15 minutes, and it was like the Alamo on Linby's goal. On 83 minutes, a Courtney Hasting's free header from 8 yards out cleared the bar. 2 minutes later and Scott Litchfield's cross found Jay Knight who's header produced a wonderful save from Craig Lear, to tip around the post.

On 88 minutes, Walters again cleared off the line, this time to deny Litchfield. A minute later, Hastings claimed a penalty for a push, which referee Ian Smith waved away.

Right on full time Knight retaliated after a rash challenge by Jake Keetley on the Bulwell player and was duly sent off.

Every one of Linby's defence deserved credit. Elson for keeping the speedy Danny Fuller quiet for most of the match, centre backs Horton and Nathan George for shackling the twin threats of Alan Jefferies and Haywood, and 18 year old Richard Peel , who was outstanding at right back.

Travelling to Bottesford with only 11 men and veteran sub John Riley, things didn’t look good for Linby Reserves when on 16 minutes the home team took the lead through Rown Triffitt.

With Manager Ash Ward having to play 90 mins at centre back, they equalised on 32 minutes as Jonny Scott rifled home after good work from Aaron Ingram. HT 1-1

Linby took the lead on 63 minutes. Good work from young Connor Hamilton set up Darren Dickens to head home, 2-1. 6 minutes later and Hamilton hit the post from 20 yards out.

Phil Riley wrapped up the scoring on 82 minutes, firing home from the edge of the area. FT 1-3

Linby Reserves progressed into the last 16 of the Reserve League cup with a 3-0 home victory over Awsworth Villa Reserves.

The game was fairly even early on until the 28th Minute when an Awsworth defender kicked out at Jonny Scott and was sent off by the Refereee Darren Smith. Linby made their 1 man advantage count on 33 minutes, when Scott finished neatly after a nice move involving Aaron Ingram and Darren Dickens.

It was 2-0 on the stroke of half time, as Dickens was brought down inside the area for a penalty, which Aaron Ingram tucked away.

Awsworth had to thank 'keeper Richard Shaw for keeping them in the game, with a string of saves to deny Ross Cheeseman, Dickens and Scott.

On 64 minutes, Scott hit the post from 10 yards out, but Linby finally made it 3-0, when Cheeseman's through ball found Dickens, who coolly slotted home from 18 yards out.

On 80 minutes, Referee Smith gave Awsworth a lifeline when he awarded a dubious penalty, for an alleged foul by Cheeseman as he try to clear the ball. Glenn Guyatt pulled off a tremendous save from Jonny Bernard's spot kick to palm the ball onto the bar and Phil Riley did well to get the follow up out of play for a corner. FT 3-0.

Linby travelled the short distance to the new home of Boots Athletic at Watnall Road hoping to avenge a 3-0 home defeat earlier in the season. The management made two changes to the side that narrowly lost to Bilborough Pelican 2-1 the previous week, with a start for Kyle McDermott in place of Dan Ellis and Glenn Guyatt coming in against his old club for the holidaying Craig Lear.

The first half was a battle and saw some meaty challenges but few cards from the man in the middle Ian Smith. Linby created several chances with Cheeseman failing to get away a shot after being set free following good work from McDermott and Campbell. McDermott also has a couple of chances that missed the target.

Boots took the lead shortly before half time following a contentious decision from linesman Ian Kirk. Dave Elson shepherded the ball out of play following a touch by Boots striker Sam Winch, however Kirk flagged for a corner. Incensed by the decision Elson was booked. Worse followed as Martin Holt rose unchallenged to head home the set piece. Skipper Campbell was also booked for making his feelings known regarding the decision and the league's choice of officials for the fixture.

Following these bookings referee Smith dipped into his pocket on a couple of occasions to book rash challenges from Alex Bowles and Ian Marley. As the half came to a close, Jake Keetley came close to pulling a goal back. HT 1-0

Just minutes after the restart, Boots doubled their advantage as Scott Peach smashed a volley past former Boots custodian Glenn Guyatt.

Linby were given a liefeline when referee Smith felt it necessary to give a second yellow card to Ian Marley for a challenge on Ross Horton that was probably only his second of the match. Linby pilled on the pressure and put the 10 men of Boots on the back foot til referee Smith evened up the numbers. Sam Winch tried to spin Dave Elson as both players went for the ball to which Smith gave a free kick. As Dave Elson turned to go back to position, Smith produced a yellow card and sent Dave Elson for an early bath. Rumours after the game were that Dave was given a second yellow for dissent for the decision, which was then changed to persistent infringement, although it was probably only his second foul of the match.

As the game drew to a close Sam Winch beat Glenn Guyatt to a deft through ball to make it 3-0 and the same player made it a hattrick as he slotted a penalty away after a rash challenge on Boots sub Mickey Lucas. FT 4-0

Despite several regulars missing in the shape of Tom Endy, Tom Walters, Daryl Wooley, Glenn Guyatt and Paul Randle, this was an easy win against third from bottom Bottesford.

The visitors just could not cope with Linby's front two of Johnny Scott and Darren Dickens. After only a minute, Dickens turned his man and outpaced the last man to cross for Scott, to make it 1-0.

It could have been more, with Richard Peel hitting the bar and Scott missing an open goal, in the first 30 minutes. On 35 minutes, Scott made it 2-0, from a Dickens cross, and on 44 minutes, Dickens made it 3-0. HT 3-0

The second half was only 5 minutes old when Dickens scored his second, stroking home from the edge of the box.

Bottesford pulled a goal back on 73 minutes when Neil Hufton scored, but Scott and Dickens wrapped up the scoring with their hat tricks. FT 6-1

A great performance from the side against title favourites Pelican, but performances alone do not win you matches. Linby did enough to deserve at least a draw, created more chances than the home team, but came away with nothing.

Linby started slowly, with Pelican enjoying the early passages of play. Dave Udah whipped a first time shot over the bar and Craig Lear saved well from a Neil Thompson shot from the edge of the area. Pelican took the lead on 29 minutes when from a near post corner, the big centre half Ian Foss wasn’t picked up, and he duly headed home to make it 0-1.

That seemed to spark Linby into life and on 32 minutes a good solo run from Nick Davies resulted in his angled shot being spilled by James Johnson, but Ross Cheesman was deemed offside. On 35 minutes Linby equalised. Ross Horton found Ross Cheeseman just inside the Linby half, he in turn laid the ball off to Spencer Goff wide left. A neat one two had Goff scampering down the wing, beating his man for pace he crossed to Cheesman to finish with a first time shot at the near post, 1-1.

On 42 minutes, Cheesman nearly punishes a static Bilborough defence as a long ball from Lear is not dealt and he narrowly lobs wide. Just two minutes later and Conor Hardy hits a rasping shot against the under side of the bar and then Lear saves well from
Danny Blanchards header to keep the score 1-1 at half time.

It was end to end stuff in the second half. Davies' through ball on 55 minutes had the Pelican defence in disarray and Goff's stole in only to see his effort roll inches wide of the post.

On 78 minutes Blanchard scored pelicans second. With the ball on the wide right he hit a hopeful cross into the box that drifted in at the back post.

Linby then laid siege on the home goal. On 80 minutes, Skipper Pete Campbell thought he'd equalised as he appeared to come from behind his marker and latch onto a Goff cross to slot into the bottom corner, but the linesman had his flag up. Two minutes later and Jake Keetley played substitute Kyle Mcdermott in on the right and his shot hit the far post and agonisingly fell just the wrong side of Campbell.

On 84 minutes, a Linby corner was only half cleared to Dave Elson whose shot was clearly handled by a home defender in the area. Astonishingly referee Dave Southern turned away appeals stating that, "he had no chance to get out of the way", despite being 10 yards away from the shot and jumping in front of the effort with his left arm raised. Having seen the penalty given against Wes Morgan on the same day, this was in a different league and a certain stonewall penalty.

On 87 minutes, McDermott was allowed to run at the Pelican defence and his rasping shot from 20 yards thundered back off the bar. Finally in the dying minutes, from another Linby corner, Campbell's header was saved by Johnson. FT 2-1

A spirited performance from Linby that even the home team admitted should have gained them at least a point.

Linby's sixth home defeat in 11 games, sent the Linby 'faithful' home moaning again, what with that and the price of a cup of tea at the 'Lane', some may hopefully not come again. Needless to say Linby should never have lost to bottom of the table Ruddington, but they deserved their win, as they out fought Linby and played some neat football at times. They are certainly not as bad as their league position looks.

It all looked so different early on, as Spencer Goff looked dangerous on his home debut. On 2 minutes, he glided past 2 defenders as if they weren’t there and clipped the top of the bar with a 20 yard shot. With Linby seemingly in control disaster struck on 17 minutes. Referee Billy Bingham allowed the game to continue after a late tackle on Jake Keetley and as Ruddington retrieved the ball Luke Foster was allowed to turn and neatly finish into the bottom corner, 0-1.

From then on Linby bossed the rest of the first half. On 20 minutes, Goff's free kick was gathered at the second attempt by Oli Mason, Ruddingtons young keeper. 4 minutes later, a deep corner found Julien Wright at the back post, whose shot hit the side netting. Goffs then sent a free kick to the back post where Dave Elson headed the chance over the bar. On 35 minutes, good work from Nick Davies gave Ross Cheeseman a 50/50 with the keeper. The Linby striker got to the ball first, but put his volley inches wide. HT 0-1

Linby carried on in the same vein second half, pushing Ruddington back, so much so they forced 7 second half corners. On 58 minutes, Cheeseman fed Wright, whose shot was well saved. 2 minutes later, Goffs corner was only half cleared to Dave Elson who drilled it back across the face of goal, but the ball evaded every Linby player in the box. On 71 minutes, Davies' corner finds Ross Horton who heads over the top. On 75 minutes, Cheeseman maybe should have put Wright or Goff in, but the striker took the option of a shot, which again Mason saved.

As Linby committed more and more men forward searching for the illusive equaliser, they were caught twice in the 87th and 88th minutes with classic counter attacking goals from Ricky Banwell and Foster.

To cap a thoughly miserable afternoon off, Davies hits the bar with a shot from 18 yards out, for what would have been only a consolation. FT 0-3

Best Trainer: Dave Elson. Usually there week in week out and probably one of the fittest at the club.
Worst Trainer: Too many to mention. Shame Matt Balm is injured as his ability to do training routines was hilarious.
Most Skillful: Nick Davies, although Simon Martin does a mean nutmeg.
Least Skillful: Craig Lear. There’s a reason he’s a goalkeeper.
Fastest: Julien Wright, must be his ‘frogs legs’.
Slowest: Dave Elson and his wide turning circle.
The Joker: Simon Martin and his ‘Sid James’ laugh. Dale Raynor’s mum jokes always raised a smile.
Most Intelligent: Only one person at the club with more than one degree so that’ll be me.
Least Intelligent: Has to be Dicko. Not only does he wear flip-flops year round he once shouted for offside from a throw-in.
Best Dress Sense: Robbo. No-one else could carry off that hunting jacket, Dicko certainly can’t.
Worst Dress Sense: Screech would probably say me after last years Xmas night out. Has to be Dicko though and his flip flops and Matt a close second for those awful pants.
Who's the longest in the shower: Not many for this category as most are dirty buggers who don’t shower. You’ll probably need to ask James ‘Fingers’ Logan though for the definitive answer.

It looked a tough game at table toppers Nottinghamshire, who won at Church Lane on the opening day of the season 5-1, but Linby Reserves have improved Considerably since then.

Linby started well and on 10 minutes, Johnny Scott's cross found Paul Randle, whose header was well saved by the Notts custodian.

Linby then gave a penalty away as Rich Howell was deemed to have handled the ball, but Marcus Denton put his spot kick wide.

Notts took the lead on 44 minutes, as a deflected shot beat keeper Glenn Guyatt. HT 1-0

Linby thought they'd equalised on 65 minutes, when sub Jamie Hargreaves' cross was flicked on by Phil Riley and Scott headed home. There looked nothing wrong with the goal, but the home linesman had it disallowed for offside. As Linby pressed for an equaliser, Notts hit on the counter attack to make it 2-0, through Daryl Rose.

Linby got a goal back on 68 minutes. Aaron Ingram played a good ball to Hargreaves, who smashed into the bottm corner, 1-2.

Linby thought they'd levelled the scores when Scott headed in, but again the home linesmans flag went up and the goal was disallowed. As Linby searched for that illusive equaliser, Notts scored another on the break, as Rose hit his hat trick. FT 3-1

Linby's current top goalscorer Julien Wright has been picked in the England Universities Squad following a succesful trial last Sunday. Missing from last weekend's 4-1 victory away at Attenborough due to the trial, Julien impressed the selectors and has been duly selected in the squad. Julien is on the all time goalscorers list on the NSL and boasts the best goal to game ratio in the NSL. This season he is continiung that record with 10 goals from 11 games. Linby bounced back from two defeats to pick up three valuable away points at a sodden Attenborough F.C.

One enforced change to the line up that put up a brave fight against top of the league Clifton the week before, Kyle McDermott away on family duties being replaced by new signing Spencer Goff. Ross Cheeseman continued up front with Julien Wright absent due to trials for England University.

Attenborough started the brightest including a long range effort from Steve Oldham that just clipped the outside of the post. After 10 minutes Linby sprang into life, racing into a 2-0 lead. First Cheeseman nipped in following an aerial challenge by Goff to get behind the Boro' defence and lob over the stranded home keeper from 20 yards. Next a pass from Campbell found new boy Spencer Goff, who had ventured in from his left wing berth, to dispatch a 20 yard right foot effort into the bottom corner. Just as you were thinking Linby might kick on and dominate boro were back in it with a goal by Oldham from the penalty spot after Pete Campbell was adjudged to have up-ended a boro player just inside the box. Linby never settled for the remainder of the half with Attenborough looking the more likely team to find the net. Oldham, who was causing numerous problems, was unlucky not to equalise when leaving both Horton and Elson in his wake dragged his shot agonisingly wide. HT 2-1

The next goal was going to be crucial and with a change of boots or two at half-time Linby defended much better and started to keep the passing shorter which suited us. A nice passing involving Goff, Whitehust, Campbell and Cheeseman finally found Davies away on goal, with options to square, he fired home at the near post to give us some breathing space. So we thought. Within a few minutes Boro were awarded their 2nd penalty of the game. A boro tactic, of landing their corners on top of the keeper with their big guys attacking it, paid dividends when Linby keeper Lear pushed out at Constable. Oldham stepped up again and again placed it to the keepers bottom left, this time Lear produced a fantastic save from not a bad penalty. That took the life out of Attenborough and it was only a matter of time before Linby picked them off, which substitute Whitehurst did, finishing coolly when one on one. FT 4-1

A deserved win, flattered by the score line but clinical finishing proved to be the big difference. Nice for once to have a full and strong bench which can make all difference. Simon martin replaced after an hour so not to aggravate some nagging strains shows this. But after 3 departures from lads thinking they're too good for the bench lets keep this up and realise no team of 11 players will ever get anywhere!

Mom picked by the opposition went to Dave Elson, not a bad shout but for me just edged by Nick Davies, who in the last two weeks has rediscovered the recipe that made him such a success when he returned last season. Put the work and effort in, play with a smile and the rest takes care of itself.

It was agony for Linby Reserves as their 4 match winning streak came to an end as they were defeated by Bulwell Reserves 1-0. It was made even worse in that Bulwell scored their winning goal just 5 minutes from the end of an enthralling local derby, in which Linby deserved a point.

Bulwell started strongly, with the Spencer brothers, Daniel and Darren pulling most of the strings. Linby's nervous start to the game had them on the backfoot and twice in the opening exchanges they had to be grateful to Glenn Guyatt, who made two good saves to deny the bulwell dangerman Courtney Hastings. Linby slowly began to get a foot hold in the game and the pacy Mitchell Duffin was at the heart of everything good. As the First half ended goalless, words and handbags were exchanged by James “Fingers” Logan and some of his Bulwelian neighbours as the players left the pitch.

Linby were better in the second half and had the chances to take the lead. On 58 minutes, good work by Duffin and Tom Walters ended with Johnny Scott having his point blank header brilliantly saved by John Hames. On 65 minutes, Scott thought he'd scored when his lob beat Hames, but Jay Milbourne managed to get back to volley the ball off the line. As tired legs started to come into effect, chances came and went at both ends. Guyatt saved a Hastings shot and Duffin was just wide at the other end. The killer goal came in the 85th minute, as Daniel Spencer finished well at the far post to beat Guyatt, for only the second goal against him in 4 matches.

It was certainly better from Linby than the 5-1 thrashing they took away at Bulwell.

Linby deserved at least a draw from this full blooded encounter against the new leaders of the NSL Senior Division, in front of a good sized crowd, estimated at 100.

The first half was a goalless, very tight affair, the two most chances of note being on 14 minutes, when a good Linby move ended with Nick Davies bringing a good save out of John Marriott in Clifton's Goal. Danny Gunn then had a golden opportunity to fire Clifton into the lead on 20 minutes, but he fired wide.

It was the second half which brought on the drama. On 50 minutes home custodian Craig Lear saved well from a quickly taken Michael Evans free kick, but it was Linby who took the lead 8 minutes later. A swift break saw Davies pick out striker Ross Cheeseman who's shot was saved by Marriott. Clifton skipper Mike Holtham looked as if he had the loose ball under control, but under pressure from Cheesman he slipped and was robbed by the livewire Kyle McDernott, who fired home from the acutest of angles, 1-0.

The turning point of the match came in the 68th minute, when Jake Keetley was deemed to have brought down the theatrically diving Michael Evans in the Linby box. The Referee pointed to the spot and the same player stepped up to send Lear the wrong way and level the scores.

After Lear had palmed a cross onto his own bar, a Linby counter attack involving substitute Ash Keetley and McDermott saw Davies cross for Cheeseman, whose back post volley was wide of the mark.

If anything the strength of the Clifton bench had the final say in an enthralling match, as Sub Ashley Way finished superbly at the far post in the 86th minute after a sweeping Clifton counter attack.

Linby didn’t deserve a third goal against them in stoppage time as they pushed forward for an equaliser. Karl Mitchell slotting home well as Linby committed men forward.

Linby pushed an excellent Clifton side to the wire, but can't dwell on what could have been. Ross Cheesemans “second” first team debut, was superb, and shows how much he has progressed since his first spell at Linby.

The Reserves chalked up their 4th win on the trot and their first double of the season at Bilborough's new home ground, TVR. The win was even sweter with 6 men missing for various reasons, First team call ups, working, holidays, etc.

A solid defensive display was the bedrock of this win, with two first half goals from Johnny Scott, the difference at the break.

A superb chip from Mitch Duffin on 65 minutes was the pick of the goals.

The scoring was rounded off by Paul Randle, with his first goal for the club.

With just one defeat in five league outings and a 5-0 mauling of Magdala Amateurs the previous week, confidence in the Linby camp was high. Intent on seeking revenge for the 3-1 defeat inflicted on them at Church Lane, Linby started the brighter. Julien Wright was causing the Keyworth back line numerous problems with his pace and movement, but on a couple of occasions he lacked the killer finish.

Against the run of play, Keyworth took the lead. A diagonal ball over the top caused confusion between Ross Horton and Craig Lear, as they hesitated, Matt Webster stole in to round Lear and tap into an empty net. Keyworth should have gone two up shortly after, but for an air shot by the Keyworth left back when well placed.

After a couple of half chances for Horton and Wright, Keyworth made it two. Another ball over the top found the Linby back line square and Dan Collison smashed the ball past a helpless Craig Lear.

Undeterred Linby tried to mount a fight back. Firstly Julien Wright and Pete Campbell combined well, before Campbell shot narrowly past an upright. Campbell then fed Wright down the inside right channel and he drew the ‘keeper before slipping the ball across goal to an unrushing Nick Davies whose effort was blocked on the line. On the stroke of half time Linby got a lifeline. Julien Wright wriggled free from two challenges before being brought down in the box for a penalty. Wright stepped up and sent Ball the wrong way to reduce the arrears and notch his 10th goal in 11 matches. HT 2-1

The second half was pretty much a replica of the first. Linby huffed and puffed but Keyworth had the killer instinct. Linby tried to reduce the arrears, but the final ball into the box was found lacking. In form striker Webster added to his first half strike when flicking on a deep free kick into the bottom corner of the net despite his diminutive size. Keyworth put the game to bed with 10 minutes remaining, when a quick break down the Keyworth right found Collison at the far post. Craig Lear somehow managed to claw the ball away from goal, but Collison was alive to the rebound and smashed the ball home from an acute angle. FT 4-1

3 wins on the trot, 15 goals and another 6 goals scored, as Ross Cheeseman fires his second hat trick in just his second game back.

It only took 10 minutes to open the scoring. Richard Howell's free kick picked out Johnny Scott, whose header was well saved by the keeper, but Cheeseman was on hand to drill in the rebound, 1-0.

As Linby took their foot of the pedal, Cavaliers enjoyed their best period of the match. Ryan Martt and Blessing Mayowa were both guilty of glaring misses.

After 30 minutes, it was 2-0. Scott's cross from the right was “lost” by the 'keeper and nestled in the back of the net via the post.

44 minutes and 3-0. Scott and Mitch Duffin combine to set Cheeseman up for his second goal. HT 3-0

Linby made it 4-0 on 65 minutes, as Arron Ingram finished off a neat move involving Tom Walters and Daryl Wooley.

On 67 minutes Ross Cheeseman seizes onto a poor ball from Cavaliers left back and slots neatly into the corner to make it 5-0 and his second hat-trick in 2 weeks.

Linby ease off and on 87 minutes are punished when Cavaliers snatch a consolation goal as Clory Olunomo heads in at the far post.

The goal of the game comes on 90 minutes. Left back Phil Riley bursts through 2 challenges and hits a screaming 30 yarder into the top corner, 'keeper never smelt it. FT 6-1

Linby's biggest win of the season sees them climb to the heady heights of 7th in the table.

Despite how the score line may suggest, Magdala started the better side with more purpose and bite and had Linby on the backfoot for a good 20 minutes. Linby took the lead midway through the half, capitalising on their first corner of the match. Nick Davies swung the ball into the near post and the 'Dala defence failed to pick up Pete Campbell whose close range header crept over the line.

Magdala stormed back, forcing two excellent saves out of craig Lear. Firstly, on 25 minutes he tips a Danny Bentley free kick over the bar, then a minute later makes a good save to deny Steve Hillier.

Nick Davies then fires in 2 good efforts, the first a well contructed move of one touch passes sees a venomous shot well saved by Dan Burke and the second flashes just inches over the bar.

On 35 minutes, the move of the match sees Linby go two to the good. Julien Wright starts and finishes the move, as he lays of a pass from Dave Hardy to Pete Campbell who finds Simon Martin. Martin sprays the ball wide to Darren Dickens on the right who fires the ball across goal for Wright to have the simplest of tap-ins. HT 2-0

The second half started similar to the first with Magdala's Bentley forcing another good save out of Craig Lear in the Linby goal. On 56 minutes, Linby make it 3-0. Darren Dickens raiding down the right crosses for Jake Keetley who lays the ball off to Pete Campbell to send a first time volley in off the post and past a motionless Dan Burke in the 'Dala goal.

Two minutes later and a rush of blood to the head of Magdala captain Rob Powell sees the game over as a contest. After two crunching tackles, Powell throws his head at Jake Keetley and Referee Chris Ward sends him for an early bath, much to the annoyance of Magdala Coach Steve Thompson who is also sent from the touchline.

On 64 minutes, Dickens and Wright combine well down the right and despite being tripped Wright somehow manages to lay the ball off to Pete Campbell who fires low into the corner to complete his first hat-trick for the club.

5 minutes later and Linby are 5 up. Follwing a fast break from a Magdala corner, a searching cross from the left by Nick Davies finds Darren Dickens at the far post who heads home for his first of the season.

The Linby management rang the changes bringing off Hardy, Davies and Keetley. allowing Morgan Whitehurst to make his debut. Yet more chances came and went as Campbell was denied a 4th by the legs of Burke following good work from Dickens and Ash Keetley and the same player later unselfishly squared the ball to Simon Martin who fired over.

You know its not your day when Hillier hits an almost unstoppable shot which polaxes the brave Ross Horton on the line. FT 0-5

Club News - Ade Ward's ban lifted / Pop up to usual tricks

Ground Maintenance Manager Dave Elson would like to announce that Secretary Ade Ward's ban on machinery at Church Lane has been lifted . On Friday 30^th October, Kez Dean led a three man team, including Ward and Elson, to cut and mark all 3 pitches out. Ward spent 3 hours on the small sit on mower and didn’t manage to break it, or fill it with the wrong petrol. Elson added, “ Don’t be shy lads, volunteers are always wanted for ground maintenance tasks at Church Lane.” If interested in helping out, please see one of the Committee.

It was good to see Chairman Alan 'Pop' Arnold back in action on Saturday. After Pop's pie throwing antics at Newark the other week, he decided to eat them on Saturday at the Roko. Before the game he popped into the health club for a quick cup of tea, only to find to his horror That the girl on the desk asked him to “sign in” and that they didn’t do tea! Well done Pop, good to see you on form again.

A hat-trick for Ross Cheeseman on his return to the club saw Linby Colliery Reserves climb to 9th in the table.

Linby stormed into a four goal lead after only 25 minutes, with the first coming after only 4 minutes. Aaron Ingram's free kick was spilt by the home 'keeper and Cheeseman snaffled up the loose ball to score, 1-0.

With just 10 minutes on the clock it's 2-0. Richard Howell's beautifully weighted through ball to Cheeseman is laid off to Ingram who smashes home from 18 yards.

4 minutes later and it's 3. Ingram's through ball, finds Johnny Scott who bravely goes in with the home keeper and squeezes the ball home.

On 25 minutes, Mitch Duffin scores a superb solo goal as he beats 2 defenders and rounds the 'keeper to make it 4-0.

Linby take their foot off the gas and 'keeper Glen Guyatt is called upon to make 2 good saves to deny the home side. HT 4-0

Normal service is resumed 10 minutes into the second half as Cheeseman cuts inside and curls a lovely left foot shot into top corner, 5-0. Ross Cheeseman completes his hat-trick on 73 minutes, heading home a teasing cross from man of the match Mitch Duffin. FT 6-0.

With ace marksmen Julien Wright and Lee Penley both away on holiday, the game although quite entertaining ended 0-0. Linby should have won the game at a canter but were denied thanks to a wonderful display of goalkeeping from Cotgrave's former NSL rep 'Keeper Matt Worster.

Linby started the game brightly and with only 4 minutes on the clock, Nick Davies beats 2 men on the right and slides a low cross to the back post where Jake Keetley is inches wide of the target. On 17 minutess, Simon Martin plays Darren Dickens in for a 1 on1, but is denied by the feet of Matt Worster. Minutes later, Martin combines well with Steve Thompson to release Davies, who jinks past his man, but his cross/shot hits the outside of the post and away to safety. Worster then pulls off two good saves in the space of a minute both to deny Martin, who tries his luck with 20 yard efforts.

At the other end, Linby switch off for a second and are nearly punished. A 25 yard free kick is played square to Cotgrave full back Adam Waddley who hits a wicked shot that cannons off the side of the woodwork.

As the half draws to a close, Dickens' pace puts him clear for a second 1 on 1 and again Worster denies him, this time tipping over his venomous shot. HT 0-0

With instructions to continue where they left off, Linby come out and do just that. As Dickens probes down the right channel, he leaves Carl Springthorpe trailing. As he enters the box he appears to be dragged down but the referee turns down appeals for a penalty. A few minutes later and the same players tussle on the opposite side of the box and this time the referee spots the shirt pull and points to the spot. Up stepped Simon Martin, but his spot kick was welled saved by Worster.

Having given one penalty, the referee was soon in the spotlight again, missing two clear penalties. Firstly, Nick Davies's cross from the left found Dickens whose shot was blocked. The ball fell to Pete Campbell whose initial shot was blocked by Springthorpe, but as the Skipper attempted to hurdle Springthorpe to have another go, his legs were unceremoniously taken from under him, but no penalty. Two minutes later and it's Dicken's again who is felled by Lewis Richards on the byeline, but again no penalty.

On 66 minutes, another cross from Davies finds Dickens at the far post who tees up Luke Parker who in turn fires over.

On 80 minutes Cotgrave nearly complete a smash and grab. Adam Waddley's corner from the right is met by a powerful header from Lewis Richards, but Craig Lear pulls off an excellent save.

On 84 minutes it's that man Dickens again, who gambles on a long punt from Lear, only to see Worster save with his feet, again. A minute later, Parker shoots, and you've guessed it, Worster saves. FT 0-0

Another away win for the Reserves, their away record is now much better than their home one. Linby took the lead as early as the 5th minute when Mitch Duffin's corner found Tom Endy who headed home. Magdala equalised on 34 minutes when a free kick was swung in and Martin Kearns rose highest to nod home. HT 1-1

Just like the first half, 5 minutes in and Linby take the lead. Richard Howell swings in a free kick that evades everyone and nestles in the back of the net. In a carbon copy of the first half, Magdala equalise from a free kick as Kearns nods in his second in the 70th minute. Despite two players stood in an offside position in front of Linby 'keeper Glenn Guyatt and a raised linesman's flag, the referee waves away protests and awards the goal. Linby aren’t to be denied, as substitute Paul Randle crosses to Aaron Ingram, who brings the ball down with one touch, then finds the top corner with an exquisite finish. FT 3-2

Linby travelled to local side bulwell on the back of 2 defeats but managed to come away with draw with ended up feeling like a win.
Again not for the first time this season, Linby fielded a much changed line up. With captain Campbell working and veteran Elson sunning himself, Jamie Hargreaves and Simon Martin found themselves thrown in at the deep end after long absences. New signing Dave Hardy slotted in at left back and young Richard Peel again stepped up from the Reserves.

Linby started quickly attacking up the slope and Wright found himself through on goal but the keeper manged to scramble the ball away. A few minutes later and Peel released Wright again, who this time made no mistake cooly skipping round the keeper to finish. Then the Linby injury curse struck with Peel having to be withdrawn, feeling the effects of giving blood the previous day, replaced by McDermott.

After 25 mins a neatly worked short corner found Davies on the edge but his goal bound effort was headed off the line by Jeffries.
Bulwell equalised moments before half time, when for the first time in the game Jeffries wriggled free from Dickens and smashed home at the near post. HT 1-1

At half time the debutant Hardy was with drawn with a hamstring pull to be replaced by Andrew Corthorn. Linby were happy with the first half showing, particually up the slope, but Bulwell started the 2nd more prominently with Bulwell's Danny Fuller becoming their main man. With Linby's pace up front and the big pitch you always fancied Linby to get in behind them but at times the passing just wasn't accurate enough and it was one of these balls that Bulwell intercepted and poured forward. A cross from the left found Fuller at the back stick who made no mistake. Fuller was suprisingly withdrawn and replaced by Courtney Hastings.

A Bulwell through ball down the right channel looked to have been delt with by Hargreaves but sub Hastings didn't give it up and deposessed the Linby full back and made for the penalty box, but trying to retrieve his error Hargreaves chopped him down for a clear penaly which Haywood duly despatched.

Bulwell seemed to think it was game over, but Linby's pace took effect 15 minutes from the end when Wright again got away, beating 3 players before squaring for Thompson to score his first goal for the club. You could sense an equaliser coming and it did 5 minutes from the end. Numerous players had the chance to stick the ball away but at last it fell to that man Wright who made no mistake from close range. FT 3-3

The scoreline flattered the visitors to Church Lane, it was never a 4-0 hammering. It seemed a strange match, with 8 of the Rolls squad being former Linby players. Linby were the better team first half, with youngsters Tom Walters and Mitch Duffin causing the Rolls centre backs Tolley and Hale all sorts of problems. The quality Rolls had told however in the last 5 minutes of the first half. Firstly Ricky Hodgson powered home a back post header on 40 minutes, then in the second minute of first half stoppage time, Dan Lee hit a sweet 30 yard volley into the top corner. So Linby went in at half time 2-0 down, after bossing proceedings.

Hesitation allowed Hodgson his second on 52 minutes and the game was virtually over. Linby then created numerous chances as Jonny Scott saw Craig Lindsay pull off a fantastic one handed reflex save, then he headed wide at the far post after good work from Mitch Duffin. Duffin himself put two one on ones wide of the mark, before against the run of play Joe Ashurst added a fourth goal on 80 minutes. FT 0-4

Church Lane to stage it's first floodlit match

Church lane is to stage its first ever game under floodlights on Thursday 22^nd October. Hucknall Sports under 9s will host the game. Craig Spray's Hucknall Sports u9s have been training on Church Lane for 2 years or so now and Craig, a big club sponsor, asked Ade Ward if he could mark a small pitch out under the training lights.

Ade with the help of his wife Sue (the Club house manager and 49 Club organiser) marked the pitch out on Friday 16^th October. Ade said, “Id like to thank Sue for helping me, there is no way I would have got any line straight without her”.

Ade just needs to learn which petrol to put into which Tractor/Mower now before he can help lift his ban from using any piece of mechanical equipment in the garage!

Linby CW FC 0 Boots Athletic FC 3

Linby fielded possibly their best 11 of this injury ravaged season so far. Only problem was they didn’t play anything like a team for the first half. Boots played neat and purposeful football, but didn’t threaten the Linby goal until they gifted them 2 first half goals looking for offside flags that didn’t come. Both goals in the 31st and 39th minutes were almost identical, scored by lone striker Jack Smith.

Half time bought a change to the formation with Jake Keetley moving into centre midfield to help out the overrun Pete Campbell and Steve Thompson. It worked to a certain extent as Linby pushed the visitors back. After Ross Horton saw his header saved on 55 minutes, the two stand out chances for Linby to get back into the game came on 58 and 75 minutes. Firstly, Nick Davies' corner from the right was headed back across goal by Jonty Bradshaw for Pete Campbell, to head against the post. Bradshaw then crossed to Wright, who laid it off for Campbell who's shot was saved by Nick Grayling.

Boots rubbed salt into the wounds on 85 minutes when substitute Neil Hamed pounced on a sloppy back pass to slot past the stranded Lear.

This was only the second win of the season for the Reserves and Ash Ward's first in charge (he was at work when they defeated Bilborough Town) Adopting a now familiar 4-5-1 formation, with Jamie Start operating as the lone striker, Linby had the ideal start. They led on 15 minutes through young Tom Walters with a superb finish.

The wide men Walters and Mitch Duffin were ripping the home team apart time and again, and it was no surprise when Start put Linby 2 nil up on 28 minutes after good work from Mitch Duffin and Daryl Wooley.

The side then dropped to sleep and allowed Newark back into the game with 2 goals before half time. Last week's First team torturer Oli Wood and Dave Price the scorers.

Linby endured an intense period of pressure from the home team, but with centre backs Gaz Towle and Dan Ellis outstanding, helped by Lionel Howell in his new role as defensive midfielder, they rode out the storm. With only ten minutes left on the clock up popped Tom Endy with a brilliant 35 yarder into the top corner.

Newark Flowserve 2 Linby CW FC 1

Linby's disappointing showing in “The Holy Grail of Notts Football,” the Notts FA Senior Cup continued with the loss at Flowserve in the first round. A game they could and should have won, but lost with 2 late goals from Flowserve substitute Oli Wood in the last ten minutes. It means Linby's only win the Senior Cup in 15 years remains a 3-1 home win over Calverton in October 2006.

The game started well for Linby, played in an awful cross wind that ruined it slightly as a spectacle.

On 11 minutes, Flowserve's young 'keeper Andy Dell lost a long crossfield ball from right back Mark Robinson, on which Julien Wright pounced and slotted the ball home to give the visitors an early lead.

5 minutes later and a good move between young debutant Richard Peel and Steve Thompson released Jonty Bradshaw, who saw his shot well saved by Dell.

On 28 minutes another chance went begging. Again good work by the busy Thompson allowed Bradshaw to play an excellent through ball to wright, who put his 1 on 1, inches wide.

As half time approached, Bradshaw's corner found the head of Ross Horton who's back post header was acrobatically cleared off the line by Aaron Martin. HT 0-1

The second half began as the first ended, with Linby searching for the all important second goal. On 57 minutes, Bradshaw's searching cross found Thompson, who saw his header brilliantly saved by Dell.

On 67 minutes, Robinson's free kick found Ross Horton at the back post. He headed across goal, but Wright's header went inches wide.

2 minutes later and Bradshaw's surging run down the left opened the home team up. He pulled the ball back to Pete Campbell who's shot was blocked by Aaron Martin.

On 72 minutes, Bradshaw again surged down the left but this time he shoots, only to be thwarted by Dell who by now has easily made up for his one mistake, and kept his team in the game.

Almost as if the script had been written, Linby were made to pay for their inability to “finish” the game off. On came young Sub Oli Wood, who virtually single handedly wins it for Newark. On 76 minutes, he is unlucky to see an angle drive come back off the base of Glenn Guyatts post. Linby don’t heed the warning as he equalised on 80 minutes after what must be said is ragged defending from Linby who had looked solid at the back.

With extra time beckoning, Wood is sent clear for a 1 on 1. Guyatt saved the intial shot, but as the ball ballooned off the keepers legs the wind held the ball in play for the Newark man to head the loose ball home. FT 1-2.

Church Warsop win 3-0 on penalties

When the draw was made, Linby Reserves couldn’t have been handed a harder draw. If the cup had been seeded Church Warsop MW must be the Top seeds. They must have missed out on the Senior Cup by a whisker. Sitting in third place in the Central Midlands Premier Division (higher than Kirkby Town last season, when Linby's first team beat them, in this same cuo) they boast players like the Johnson brothers, Jordan who skippered Shirebrook Town only 2 seasons ago in the NCEL Prem and his brother Simon who top scored for Shirebrook 2 seasons ago and not to mention Danny Mclane who top scored for Ollerton Town last season. Only 2 weeks ago they won 9-2 at Thorne Colliery, with Simon Johnson scoring an incredible 7 goals. On the other hand Linby Reserves lost 6-2 at fellow strugglers Underwood last week.

Bouyed by the influx of first teamers Darren Dickens, Jake Keetley , Jamie Hargreaves, and Jonny Scott, Linby's plans were simple, get men behind the ball to keep the score down! They endured a whirlwind start from the home team, but with Dickens outstandingly marshalling the dangerous Simon Johnson and fellow centre back Daniel Ellis keeping Danny Mclane quiet they kept the scores blank. As the minutes ticked by, Warsop started to get frustrated and skipper Steve McGurk lost his head and headbutted Jake Keetley, and was sent off, in the 30th minute. Despite this, Linby still stuck to their gameplan, resticting the home team to long range efforts.

In the second half Mclane put a free header wide, then substitute Sean Vella crashed a 20 yard shot against the bar. Linby held on and on 80 minutes Ian Dixon was sent off for a stamp on Phil Riley, reducing the home team to nine men.

The game entered extra time and Arron Ingram saw a shot saved on 105minutes, then another free header from Mclane fizzed wide.

Penalties arrived. Jonny Scott put the first one wide , Warsop scored. Dale Raynor saw his kick saved, Warsop scored. Ingram saw his kick saved and Warsop scored. That was that, 3-0 on penalties.

Despite a growing injury list, now including new signings Steve Thompson and Luke Parker, to add to Dancer, Dilnot, Gould, McDermott, Rick, Horton and Martin still suspended, Linby took all 3 points.

It was a whirlwind start for the “reds” who were kicking uphill. After only 4 minutes, Nick Davies slides in Julien Wright who scores with an angled shot, despite the best attempts of Tommy Wright to keep the ball out.

On 9 minutes, Wright nearly doubles his tally as he hits a wicked crossshot that comes back off the stantion, with many believing it hit the inside of the goal frame.

Skipper Pete Campbell makes it 2-0 in the 33rd minute, when he exchanges passes with Jonty Bradshaw before spoting GSB keeper Tommy Wright off his line and lobbing him from 25 yards out.

As half time approaches, the dangerous former Basford stiker Terry Guerboury sees his goal bound header, headed off the line by Jonty Bradshaw,. HT 2-0

After a decent start to the second half from Linby in which Nick Davies has a shot which hoes inches wide, they switch off and concede 2 goals inside a minute. On 55 minutes, Karl Clowery plants a free header from 8 yards into the roof of the net, then Guerboury drifts into space and finishes well to equalise.

Only level for a short period, Linby's own “Finisher Supreme” Wright gets onto the end of Bradshaw's through ball for a 1 on 1, which he calmly slots into the net fto make it 3-2.

On 66 minutes, Nick Davies sees a stinging drive well saved by Wright, before Pete Campbell somehow manages to miss the chance of the match from close range.

At the death, Craig Lear pulls off a 1 on 1 save to deny Clowery and bag the 3 points. FT 3-2

After a bright start by the Reserves, which saw new signing Steve Russell prominent, they concede a goal in the home sides first attack on 10 minutes, when veteran striker Steve Frogatt was left unmarked.

Froggatt then made it 2-0 on 25 minutes.

Steve Russell curls in a lovely free kick to reduce the arrears on 30 minutes, 2-1.

Poor finishing from Linby, as they could and should have gone in at half time in front. HT 2-1

After 47 minutes, Russell's shot is inches wide of the post, as Linby start the second half how they finished the first.

Against the run of play, Froggatt completes his hat trick on 52 minutes to make it 3-1 and a minute later Linby concede a fourth goal.

Disaster on 68 minutes as after a period of pressure on the home goal, Underwood break and add a fifth goal.

On 75 minutess, Gaz Towle scores his second goal in 2 games to make it 5-2, but this is academic as two mins from time Underwood add salt into the wounds with a sixth goal. FT 6-2

Despite the growing unavailable list, Linby collected three points from third placed Kimberley. In a much improved display, they were more solid, starting in a 4-5-1 formation, with new signing Steve Thompson in a midfield trio with Jake Keetley and Luke Parker.

In a tight closely fought first half Linby had the two stand out chances. Firstly Julien Wright shot wide on 16 minutes after good work from Thompson. Nick Davies then curled a shot inches wide on 29 minutes after a flowing Linby move, which had the Waterloo Road stand Faithful purring. HT 0-0

On 54 minutes, Jonny Scott put a good chance wide after good work by lone stiker Wright. As the pressure mounted on the visitors goal, Luke Parker saw a terrific shot clawed away by Luca Rocco.

On 64 minutes, the breakthrough finally came, Davies' corner was only cleared to the edge of the area where Parker pounced to hit a stunning half volley in off the bar from 20 yards out, 1-0.

Linby began to get slightly nervy as Kimberley enjoyed their best spell of the game. Craig Lear did well to save dangerman Jake Fishers shot on 72 minutes.

The win was finally sealed on 90 minutes, when a driving run from sub Darren Dickens opened up the Kimberley defence. He found Nick Davies with a sublime pass which he in turn planted the chance into the top corner. FT 2-0

As the injury and unavailibilty crisis deepened, Shane Fitzpatrick and Luke Parker became the 29th and 30th players used by the first team in only 6 games, as both made their competitive debuts.

Despite a decent start, which saw Julien Wrights shot hit the side netting on 20 minutes, Linby went behind on 32 minutes, when Elliot Royston capitalized on hestitation in the reds defence.

It should have been 2-0, 5 mins later as Matt Webster wasted a 1 on 1 for the visitors.

It was 2-0 on 43mins, as Dan Collinson set keyworth up for their first win at Church Lane for 9 years.

The Reds came out better early second half, Shane Fitzpatrick setting Wright up for his third goal of the season, 1-2.

On 53 minutes, Jonty Bradshaw's cross found Fitzpatrick, but his shot was just inches wide. Linby continued to pile on the pressure for an equaliser, but were caught on a rare “Green uns” break, and Dave Holmes headed Keyworth's only chance of the second half into the roof of the net, 1-3.

On a bad day for broken legs, it looked like Jamie Brown had broken his, when in the last minute he was chopped down from
behind for what should have been a “nailed on” penalty. Amazingly the Referee didn’t give it. Luckily after a trip to A&E Jamie was diagnosed with a badly sprained ankle.

Linby Ressies had gone 1-0 down on 33 mins, before a 35 yard pile driver of a free kick from Phil Riley brought them level on 75 mins. From then they should have won it, as well as the penalty, they missed two 1 on 1 opportunities

'Continuing improvement' are the “Buzz words “ coming from Ash Ward and Paul Frizzelle, gaining a point without the services of arguably their best player so far this season, Ross Horton, who was called up into the first team.

After Saturday’s disappointing home defeat to Wollaton, the side were hoping to get back to winning ways and put on a performance for the home crowd. Being a Bank Holiday fixture, both sides were playing their second match in 3 days and were without players through injuries, work or family commitments. Matt Keetley and Kez Dean gave first team debuts to Tom Endy who replaced the injured Mark Robinson and Tom Walters and Lee Weir who replaced the injured Julien Wright and Darren Dickens. Jake Keetley returned from injury to replace the suspended Simon Martin.

Defending the slope, Linby started where they left off against Wollaton. Strong in the tackle, crisp passing and with youthful pace upfront, Linby made all the early running. Nick Davies was posing a threat down the left and he sprung the Cavaliers offside trap to send both Lee Weir and Tom Walters free. Weir made it first to the ball and as he bore down on goal he could only manage to strike the ball straight at the advancing Martt in the Cavaliers goal. Linby probably came closest to scoring after 20 minutes when Pete Campbell met a low Jonty Bradshaw corner at the near post. Andrew Danlylszyn stopped his first goal bound effort on the line and his follow up shot was deemed by many to have struck the same players’ hand. The referee gave nothing and Campbell’s third attempt was blocked and gratefully grasped by Martt. Pete Campbell again went close from a Jonty Bradshaw free kick. This time Nick Davies cleverly stepped over the ball and it ran through to Campbell who took a touch before firing low toward goal. From nowhere the Cavaliers left back managed to block the ball away to safety. Another shout for a penalty was waived away in the 40th minute when Tom Walters challenged for a high ball with ‘keeper Martt. Walters headed the ball goal wards and as he and the ball headed towards goal, Martt’s follow through took out the young striker. Adding insult to injury, Tom Walters had to be replaced by Ash Keetley as a result of the clash. As the half drew to a close, Cavaliers forced a few corners and Chris Joseph tested Craig Lear with a dipping free kick from the right. HT 0-0

Attacking the shed end, Linby continued in the same vein. With the returning Jake Keetley and Pete Campbell controlling the midfield and Nick Davies and Jonty Bradshaw posing threats down the wings, surely the deadlock would be broken. Nick Davies nearly did so after 60 minutes when after a jinking run down the middle his vicious shot hit Martt’s left hand upright and out for a goal kick. Jake Keetley then did well down the right to hit a high cross into the box that Pete Campbell narrowly headed wide and over. With Linby mounting pressure, the Cavaliers midfield resorted to spoiling tactics trying to halt any attacks. The home side were made to rue not turning their possession into goals as Cavaliers broke the deadlock. A long ball by Ben Simms evaded the Linby back line and Justin Evans managed to break free. Under pressure from Nathan George, Craig Lear was able to tip Evans’ goal bound effort wide and for a corner. From the resultant corner, Chris Joseph rose highest to send a powerful header into the Linby net. FT 0-1

A disappointing result in a game so dominated by the home side. Without a recognised 1st team striker, finding the net was always going to be difficult and it proved so. The side will have to pick itself up after a disappointing Bank Holiday weekend and hope to get back to winning ways against Keyworth on the 5th

Linby went into the game full of optimism following a return of 6 points from a possible 9. Matt Keetley and Kez Dean made 2 changes from the win against Attenborough, with Nathan George returning to the heart of the defence, Dave Elson moving over to left back to cover for the absent James Hargreaves and Darren Dickens returning to partner Julien Wright up front for the absent Kyle McDermott.

Wollaton were out of the traps early and managed to pin Linby into their own half as they tried to defend the slope first half. It was to no surprise then that Wollaton found space in the middle of the park for Marks to set away young Jamie Carlton who finished coolly under pressure from an advancing Craig Lear.

With Hawkins strutting his stuff in midfield and controlling the game, Linby struggled to get a foothold in the game. Giving the ball away cheaply and not managing to keep hold of possession, Wollaton were able to rain in several shots on Craig Lear. From a partially cleared corner Wollaton managed to extend their lead. The ball was whipped in from right to left where Justin Whatmore had the easiest of chances from 3 yards. Despite appeals from Lear for offside no flag came. To make matters worse, Linby lost Darren Dickens to a recurrent hamstring strain and he had to be replaced by Johnny Scott. After an awful 45 minutes, Linby were grateful of the referee’s whistle and a regroup in the dressing room. HT 0-2.

With the management’s words ringing in their ears Linby came out the second half in determined mood and it was their turn to put Wollaton on the back foot. With Simon Martin and Pete Campbell managing to get more of a foothold in the middle of the park, it was Wollaton who we becoming the more wasteful in possession. Julien Wright managed to wriggle free on a number of occasions to test Flinders, as the Wollaton defence became hesitant. Linby were given a lifeline on 55 minutes when a near post corner fell at Julien Wright’s feet. He managed to loft the ball over Flinders, but before the ball could hit the net, Jamie McKeever stuck a hand up to prevent the ball crossing the line. The referee awarded a spot kick and McKeever was sent off. Wright struck his penalty weakly and Flinders guessed right, but Julien managed to knock home the rebound to reduce the defecit.

With 35 minutes still to play and with Wollaton down to 10 men, it was game on. Johnny Scott and Julien Wright were putting the Wollaton defence under constant pressure, but unfortunately the break through wouldn’t come. It nearly did come on 75 minutes as a half cleared corner fell to Simon Martin who’s shot was only partially saved by Flinders. The ball fell to Pete Campbell and his volley was saved at point blank range from Flinders. Linby knocked and knocked at the door, but the goal just wouldn’t come. Wollaton could have sewn the game up late on as when through on goal, the Wollaton substitute rounded Lear, but blazed over. FT 1-2

Linby Res Makeshift team go one down on 2 mins after the impressive Joel Goodacre finishes a sweeping Carlton move. It looks ominus for the Reds as Glenn Guyatt is forced into a string of impressive saves to keep them in the game. Ash Wards side began to ease themselves into the game and in truly awful conditions, Mitchell Duffin and Jamie Brown began to put Carlton under pressure. With them both impressing, chances for them start to come, against a typically well drilled and fit Carlton Town outfit. Ross Horton is superb again at the heart of the Linby defence and he slams home the equaliser on 65mins, when an Ash Keetley corner isn’t dealt with by the home team.Keetley could have won it for the reds on 80 minutes, but former Calverton Academy keeper Callum Marks makes a great save to deny him.

The Reserves picked up their first points of the season with a 2-1 victory over relegated Bilborough Town. Johnny Scott put Linby in front with a fine individual goal after 20 mins, calmy rolling it under the keeper.

Linby battled well playing a new wing back formation, but Ricky Beardsley equalised straight after half time, as a cleared corner dropped to the corner of the 18 yard box and he fired it through a crowd and in.

Mitchell Duffin scored the winner with a great strike from distance hard and low into the net.

Captain Ross Horton at the back was excellent but young Peel in an unfamiliar wing back position was superb and was given the MOM award.

After Saturday’s battling victory over neighbours Hucknall Rolls Leisure, managers Matt Keetley and Kez Dean again had to shuffle the pack. Joining Jake Keetley and Martyn Gould on the sidelines were Nathan George and Darren Dickens, with Nick Davies unavailable through work. In came John Dilnot and James Hargreaves for their first competitive starts for the club and Julien Wright had sufficiently recovered from his bout of swine flu to partner Kyle McDermott up top.

Linby began the match playing up the hill and looking into a setting sun. The hill is never easy to defend and the low sun made it difficult for the defence to judge long balls aimed at the Attenborough forwards of Oldham and Constable. In a first half of cat and mouse, both sides managed to get behind the opposition defences with just the final ball lacking. With neither side really testing the ‘keeper, the deadlock was broken by a strike of pure quality. Dave Elson strode out of defence before laying the ball wide to Jonty Bradshaw who set Julien Wright away down the right flank. Julien pulled the ball back to the edge of the area before being unceremoniously dumped in the shrubbery. Julien therefore missed the dividends of his hard work, as an onrushing Ash Keetley drove the ball low and hard and in off the ‘keeper’s left hand post to put Linby 1-0 up. A strike right out of the top drawer. HT 1-0

Linby started the second half in distinct contrast to the first. Lethargic and poor in possession, Linby quickly got a wake up call. A half clearance was picked up by Spencer who threaded a ball through to Steve Oldham. Under pressure from Dave Elson, he managed to squeeze a shot away that beat Craig Lear on his near post and equal the scores. With this kick up the backside, Linby again started to play. With most joy in the first half coming from the right, it was no surprise that 2 quick goals came from that source. Firstly, Julien Wright combined well with Jonty Bradshaw who in turn fed Kyle McDermott. As he advanced into the box the ball got stuck under his feet and in the ‘keeper’s haste to get to the ball he dumped Kyle on his backside for a stonewall penalty. Up stepped Julien Wright who calmly sent the ‘keeper the wrong way to put Linby 2-1 up. Two minutes later it was 3. Julien Wright came deep to retrieve the ball and sent Kyle McDermott scampering away down the right channel. With much to do, Kyle cut in from the right and struck a curling left foot shot that nestled into the back of the net.

Several changes were made as Matt Rick replaced Ash Keetley and Ross Horton and Clint Dancer replaced defenders Dave Elson and Mark Robinson respectively. One of the substitutes, Clint Dancer, should have put the game to bed, but we can only assume he shut his eyes as he put a free header from Kyle McDermott’s corner wide. As Linby again took their foot off the gas, Attenborough threw men forward looking to salvage something from the game. With the defence at sixes and sevens, Ross Horton was left with 2 men at the back post, where Constable’s scuffed shot deceived Craig Lear and rested in the back of the net. Sniffing a point Attenborough went all out, throwing centre half Alex Oldham up front to partner his brother. The Linby back line however managed to hold firm for the 3 points.
Linby made this much harder than it ever should have been. At 3-1 the game should have been sewn up. The side will have to learn from this and be more ruthless in future.

Many a quote or saying has been written or spoken on the issue of luck. In Saturday’s local derby many may say that Linby Colliery Welfare had a huge slice of luck.

As per last season the fixture randomiser threw up a tasty local encounter early doors. Linby’s number 1 football club versus Hucknall’s newly crowned number 2 football club. On a hot August day a sizeable crowd were at the Lane to watch as Linby met a rested and fresh Rolls Leisure side. Several enforced changes had to be made to the Linby starting eleven with Jake Keetley and Martyn Gould out through injury and Julien Wright not fully fit after his bout of swine flu. With just one recognizable striker available at kick off, the side lined up 4-5-1 with Kyle McDermott the lone striker, Nick Davies on the left, Darren Dickens reverting to left back and Ash Keetley joining the returning Simon Martin and Pete Campbell in midfield.

Defending the hill first half, Linby were always going to be up against it. With no real outlet for the defence and Rolls’ Soar being allowed to use his right foot wand from the back, possession was never going to be in Linby’s favour. Graft was the order of the day. Whilst some sides had already played a couple of league matches, Rolls were fresh from a further weeks’ rest and they quickly put the home side under pressure with Soar looking to pick out the runs of both Rennicks and Start. Numerous free kicks and corners came Roll’s way, but their air of predictability made it easy for the home side to deal with.

Rolls were aggrieved not to have a spot kick after 20 minutes after a surging run from Andy Start down the left. Nathan George tracked the run of Start and as he fell theatrically just inside the box, the referee pointed to the corner flag. Rolls came close minutes later as Rennicks' free kick from the left was tipped on to the post by Craig Lear and away to safety. Rennicks should have done better from close range as a long ball from Soar evaded Dave Elson, but he could only strike the ball straight at Craig Lear and away for a corner. As the half drew to a close, another carbon copy free kick to the back post was headed in by Soar, but was chalked off due to a push by the same player on Nathan George. HT 0-0

After successfully negotiating the slope, Linby resorted to a more familiar 4-4-2, with Ash Keetley joining Kyle McDermott up top. The only goal of the game came only 8 minutes into the second half and from an unlikely source. A long free kick from Simon Martin evaded everyone and fell into Rolls ‘keeper Neil Waters’ hands. In what can only be described as a moment of madness, Waters hastily thumped the ball forward only to see it cannon off Dwayne Soar’s backside. The ball fell kindly to Dave Elson who calmly slotted the ball into the Rolls net.

Rolls could and should have been level within minutes as they broke quickly from a Linby corner and managed to free up Dan Lee who wasted a glorious 1-on-1 chance, lofting the ball weekly over Craig Lear and over the bar. The ever hungry and man of the match, Kyle McDermott then went on a surging run at the heart of the Rolls defence before unleashing a venomous drive that had Waters stranded. Expecting the back of the net to ripple, the ball cannoned off the bar and away to safety.

With time running out, Rolls had several strikes from distance, as shots from Lee, Short and Betteridge all cleared the Linby bar or were straight at Lear. Rolls did have the ball in the back of the Linby net, but Start was rightly flagged offside. With pressure continuing till the final whistle, Linby held firm to keep a clean sheet and 3 points. FT 1-0

With only one recognizable striker available at 3pm, this was always going to be a battle. Rolls can point to their greater possession and chances, but a resolute defence and dogged determination saw Linby home to their first points of the season.

Recipe for opening league game defeat. Meet one strong, physical title contending side, add a weak and poor referee, throw in 2 quick injuries and a well below par performance, result a 4-0 defeat.

After an unbeaten pre-season run with good wins against 'higher ranked opposition', the squad were buoyant ahead of the game. After a couple of early scares, the sparring between the sides was halted when Martyn Gould went down under an innocuous challenge. Straight away he feared a recurrence of his ACL injury, from which he had only just returned after a 2 year lay off. Jake Keetley was also withdrawn due to a recurrent rib injury picked up playing Sunday football. Replacing them were Tom Campbell and Darren Dickens, with Kyle McDermott moving to the centre of midfield and Darren Dickens partnering Julien Wright up top. This unexpected change clearly disrupted the side and with no main striker to hold the ball up, the defence was going deeper and deeper under the pressure. Despite this the game could have changed when Basford ‘keeper Curtis MacDonald raced out to clear a through ball only for it to rise up and strike what the referee believed to be his arm. Now in modern day football that could be deemed a red card, especially as Julien Wright was behind him and would have been through on goal. The lenient referee deemed it only a talking to? The Linby defence finally cracked midway through the half as a poorly headed clearance fell to Jon Bower who fed John Manders to crash home from just inside the box. It was quickly two as Will Heath fed John Manders who twisted and turned 2 defenders to then fire across Craig Lear. But for the linesman’s flag, Manders would have had a first half hattrick and Linby were thankful for the half time whistle. HT 2 – 0

Despite the half time team talk, Linby started the second half slowly. Walker and Manders were a constant menace, but they failed to capitalise on several half chances and corners. Linby started to get a footing in the game, as Julien Wright managed to wriggle free on a couple of occasions and Darren Dickens headed over a Tom Campbell corner. Another bizarre refereeing decision had a hand in Linby going 3 down. As Julien Wright burst to the bye line, he pulled the ball back for Dickens whose goal bound shot was deflected wide and towards the corner flag. Despite this the referee gave a goal kick. From this punted goal kick Basford managed to free Ash Murdoch who fed Lewis Johnson just inside the box and he shot across Craig Lear into the far corner. Linby still had a few chances to get on the score sheet as Kyle McDermott twice went close and Dave Elson shot straight at MacDonald on a surge forward. Basford compounded a miserable night for Linby as Austin Wallace managed to get free down the middle and slide the ball past Craig Lear despite the best attempts of Nathan George to clear. FT 4 - 0

A very disappointing evening for Linby after such a positive pre season. The side will have to quickly pick itself up with the visit of local rivals Hucknall Rolls Leisure on Saturday.
